As you approach the monastery, you’ll be greeted by rows of religious flags lining the entrance. Inside, the halls are adorned with intricate wall paintings depicting Buddha and his teachings, the Dharmachakra, the Four Heavenly Kings, and other aspects of Buddhism.

Meet Shakyamuni Buddha: Shey Monastery
Nestled within Shey Monastery lies its crowning jewel: a magnificent gold-plated copper statue of seated Shakyamuni Buddha, ranking as the second largest statue in Ladakh. Adorning the space before the statue is a grand wax bowl perpetually lit for a year, symbolizing eternal illumination and renewal upon its yearly replacement.
